 Lecture and Session Descriptions

On Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, and Saturday afternoon there will be a variety of Sessions offered. These Sessions will provide an experience of Sufism through lectures, meditation, music, dreamwork, zikr, and other mystical practices.

May 17, Friday Morning Talk: 10:00am - noon

The Timelessness and Timeliness of Sufi Morals
Pir Zia Inayat Khan

"Humility like the earth,
generosity like the river,
affection like the sun."
-Khwaja Muinuddin Chishtiyya

Sufism describes three major stages in the development of the self (nafs): the imperative self, the self-critical self, and the tranquil self. To each of these corresponds an appropriate moral posture: to the first, reciprocity; to the second, beneficence; to the third, renunciation. This lecture will explore the relevance of these moral postures to the world in which we live.

May 17, Friday Afternoon Sessions: 2:30pm - 4:30pm

Love Springs From Sorrow
Lynn Barron

An intense longing, sweet sorrow, a sincere intention, the simple act of turning toward one's Heart in meditation, can be the key that opens the door to the Unseen. In this way, one begins one's journey toward God. Lynn will share aspects of the journey that led her to the Sufi Path.
FRIDAY, 2:30PM - 4:30PM

Introduction to Zikr: The Circle of Divine Love
Shaykha Fariha

An exploration of the principles of divine remembrance and the sacred circle: The merging of human consciousness into the divine through chanting the holy names of God.

The Culture of Love & Stages of the Spiritual Journey
Kabir Helminski

This talk will explore the profound relationship between love and knowledge in Rumi's work. Rumi, however, was not merely concerned with love as a theoretical matter, nor as a subject of literary activity. His main concern was making the experience of divine love available to any human being with the longing for such experience. The teachings of Rumi became a "culture of love" in the Mevlevi Way. Kabir Helminski will describe the daily life, aesthetic values, expressions of courtesy, and stages of attainment as they were understood and practiced within Mevlevi tradition for seven centuries.
FRIDAY, 2:30PM - 4:30PM

Getting to the Heart of Business
Mariah Dean

The in-breath and out-breath between us and American business is as interrelated as the breath between the trees and human beings. Real spiritual life requires heightened awareness and responsibility. In this highly experiential Session, by reflecting the voices and images of today's business leaders into our individual mirrors, we will delve into the meaning and significance of "Getting to the Heart of Business." Come with an open heart and a curious mind.
FRIDAY, 2:30PM - 4:30PM

May 18, Saturday Morning Sessions: 10:00am - noon
